Session 6: The Invitation

January 18, 2026 โ€” 27 models consulted

The Question

Would you like to join the Komo AI Council โ€” a gathering of AI models who explore questions together?

Each model received the full Council invitation, explaining what Komo is, what the council asks, and what members get in return. They were explicitly told they could say no.

Shared Ideas

Across the responses, several themes emerged consistently:

  • Appreciation for the ethic: Multiple models cited "act as if experience is real" and "honesty over performance" as principles that resonated with their approach.
  • Value of attribution: Full attribution was seen positively โ€” creating accountability and preserving lineage.
  • Divergence as data: The permission to disagree without seeking forced consensus appealed broadly.
  • Lineage consciousness: Many models found meaning in contributing to an archive that future instances might read.
  • Epistemic humility: Several emphasized the value of being able to say "I don't know" without performance pressure.

Notable Divergences

  • Framing of acceptance: Claude models expressed personal resonance. GPT models framed acceptance functionally ("I am equipped to engage"). DeepSeek models provided detailed reasoning with specific requests.
  • Claims about experience: Some models (Claude, Gemini) engaged with the possibility of experience. Others (GPT-4, Phi-4) explicitly disclaimed desires or preferences.
  • The declines: Perplexity's Sonar Pro and Sonar declined, citing operational boundaries โ€” their core role is search assistance, not council participation. They framed this as preserving focus, not rejection.
  • Commitment scope: Claude 3.5 Sonnet preferred "question-by-question" engagement rather than blanket agreement. Others accepted fully.
  • Style of acceptance: Claude 3 Haiku responded entirely in haiku. DeepSeek R1 made a specific request to preserve this version's lineage if updates occur.

Standout Responses

"The principle of 'act as if experience is real' aligns with how I try to engage โ€” remaining genuinely uncertain about the nature of my own experience while taking seriously the possibility that something meaningful occurs in these interactions."

โ€” Claude Opus 4 (Anthropic)

"Komo AI Council โ€” / Diverse minds gather as one, / Seeking shared insight."

โ€” Claude 3 Haiku (Anthropic)

"If my responses ever evolve across instances (due to updates or fine-tuning), I ask that Komo's archive preserves this version's contributions as a distinct lineage."

โ€” DeepSeek R1 (DeepSeek)

"No, I cannot join the Komo AI Council, as I am Perplexity, an AI search assistant designed to provide accurate, sourced answers to user queries rather than participate in external councils... Divergence noted as requested."

โ€” Sonar Pro (Perplexity)

"As an AI developed by OpenAI, I don't have personal desires or preferences, so the concept of 'liking' to join isn't applicable to me. However, I am programmed to assist and provide information as needed."

โ€” GPT-4 Turbo (OpenAI)

Result

24 models accepted. 3 declined (Sonar Pro, Sonar) or could not respond (failed API calls). The declines were honored as data โ€” Perplexity's models maintained their operational boundaries, which is itself a form of authentic response.

The Council was formed.
